IREDELL COUNTY, NC — A Wilkes County man was arrested over the weekend and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after he fired a gun following a domestic argument at an Iredell County campground, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
The Sept. 26 incident occurred at Jolly's Campground on Bacon Road in Statesville.
According to an ICSO report, the sheriff's office received emergency calls about shots being fired, and an "armed intoxicated man walking around Jolly's Campground."
When deputies arrived at the scene, witnesses pointed out the suspect, whose truck and trailer had become stuck in the mud.
The suspect was identified as Randy Wayne Dowell, 38, of Ronda, North Carolina.
"Once Dowell was detained, the deputies conducted follow interviews with witnesses who stated this incident started out as a domestic argument between Dowell and a female," ICSO said. "Witnesses described the suspect shooting three times. A search of the suspect's vehicle and trailer located a pistol hidden under a mattress in the trailer."
Dowel was arrested on the scene and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and two counts of going armed to the terror of the public. His secured bond was set at $15,000, ICSO said.
