OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Oakland County schools were left off the list of sites where outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported, according to data provided by the state of Michigan Monday. In all, there were 24 new outbreaks of the coronavirus reported at schools across Michigan on Monday. According to the state, there are currently 63 ongoing outbreaks of the coronavirus at Michigan schools. While no Oakland County schools made it on the list of new outbreaks, five schools in Oakland County have an ongoing outbreak, according to the state. Oakland Christian Elementary School in Auburn Hills reported on Sept. 14 that four people — a group made up of both students and staff — had tested for the coronavirus. The state reported on Sept. 21 that two students at Brookfield Academy in Troy had tested positive for the coronavirus. Three students at Notre Dame Prep in Pontiac tested positive for the virus, the state reported Sept. 14. Novi High School had nine students test positive for the coronavirus, the state reported Sept. 21. Seven students have tested positive for the coronavirus at Oakland University, the state reported Sept. 28. It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household. The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data. Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
