Description
MOORESVILLE, NC — Mooresville police have issued a warning that a new phone scam is using the names of town officers in a bid to bilk area residents out of money.
"Scammers are falsely claiming there is a warrant for not showing up for court and they are using the names of actual Mooresville Police officers, past and present," Mooresville Police Department said.
Scammers are demanding payment of a fine or fee by phone in order to avoid arrest, the department said.
"We recommend that anyone who receives these calls should just hang up," MPD said. "Do not provide money or personal information. The Mooresville Police Department will never ask for money or pre-paid money cards to settle a warrant or missing a court date"
Have you received a scam call? If so, MPD said that incidents should be reported to the FBI, Internet Crime Complaint Center IC3, www.ic3.gov or to the Mooresville Police Department at 704-664-3311.
