Description
SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs is one of the safer cities in Georgia, according to a survey released earlier this month by a website that tracks crime and security.
SafeWise ranks Sandy Springs 21st on its list of Georgia's 50 Safest Cities of 2020. Only two Georgia cities cracked the list of America's 100 Safest Cities: Milton at No. 55 and Johns Creek at No. 85.
The survey ranked 127 Georgia cities. Nearby Johns Creek is ranked second in the state, Milton was third, Alpharetta came in at No. 13 and Roswell at No. 19.
SafeWise ranks cities in Georgia and other states based on both violent crimes and property crimes as reported to the FBI. While Georgia's violent crime rate is low versus the national rate — 3.3 incidents per 1,000 versus 3.7 incidents nationwide, its property-crime rate is considerably higher, at 25.7 incidents per 1,000 versus a national rate of 22.0.
Sandy Springs reported 1.3 violent crimes per 1,000 and 15.7 property crimes per 1,000 — fewer violent and property crimes as the rest of the state.
SafeWise's 10 safest Georgia cities are Braselton, Johns Creek, Milton, Senoia, Summerville, Holly Springs, Tyrone, Peachtree City, Chatsworth and Grovetown. Milton ranked 55th nationally, and Johns Creek ranked 85th nationally.
Crime rates were computers for cities that met SafeWise's population threshold, which is based on the median population of the state. If a city isn't included, it either didn't meet that threshold or didn't submit crime statistics to the FBI.
