Press release from City of Sandy Springs: 12/15/2020 The Sandy Springs City Council voted to approve Ronda Smith as its representative and Gabriel Sterling as the Mayor's appointment on a commission to conduct a review of the City's Charter. According to the City's Charter, a Charter Commission is appointed after the City's 15th anniversary to review and make recommendations to the Georgia General Assembly. City Code also instructs the City Council to call for a Charter Commission at the first regularly scheduled City Council meeting after its anniversary date of December 1. The Charter Commission is comprised of Sandy Springs residents who review the Charter, the City's history and makes recommendations for changes. In addition to appointments by the Mayor and City Council, members of the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate whose district lies wholly or partially within the corporate boundaries of Sandy Springs also appoint individuals to the Charter Commission. The first Charter Commission met in 2011 following the City's fifth anniversary. The Charter Commission has six months to conduct its business and provide a written report to the Georgia Legislature, which ultimately decides on any changes to the Sandy Springs City Charter.
