OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Michigan State Police seized an AR-15 rifle and a loaded 5.7x28mm FN Herstal pistol from a 20-year-old man they stopped on an Oakland County freeway for driving 20mph over the speed limit, authorities said Thursday morning.
The traffic stop took place around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Michigan State Police trooper from the Metro North post was patrolling I-696 in Oak Park, police said. The trooper pulled over a Lincoln MKZ for traveling 90 mph in a 70 mph zone, police said.
When the trooper approached the vehicle, they said the driver showed signs of "suspicious behavior" and quickly admitted to having a handgun.
Police said the loaded pistol was found in the driver's waistband; he did not have a license to carry a concealed weapon, although the pistol was registered to the driver. Police said they also found a loaded AR-15 rifle in the vehicle.
The driver was lodged in the Oakland County Jail and the case was submitted to the prosecutor's office for review, police said.
