HUNTERSVILLE, NC — Residents of a Birkdale apartment complex were evacuated Saturday after an explosive device was found in a Huntersville man's home, according to Huntersville Police Department.
Following the incident, Justin Lloyd Coleman, 38, was arrested, police said.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Nov. 28, when HPD officers entered the apartment in the Fairways at Birkdale complex located in the 800 block of Streamview Drive to assist in a domestic property recovery.
According to WSOC, a resident of the home sought help from officers in retrieving their possessions after a domestic disturbance incident.
"While on scene, one of the officers observed, what appeared to be, an explosive device," HPD said in a statement released Monday.
The area surrounding the immediate area was evacuated as HPD requested assistance from other agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Bomb Squad and Huntersville Fire Department.
"The device was later safely disposed of and removed from the scene," HPD said.
Following the incident, Coleman was arrested Sunday without incident by officers of the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and HPD said anyone with information is asked to contact North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867.
