What is considered "small rehoming fee"?

I'm looking for a puppy, but most of the ads don't say how much anyone wants for them. So, what is considered "small" and why don't people just list the price in the ad? I've looked at shelters but, most of what they have is all some sort of pit bull and I can't have a pit where I live.
