STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Feb. 15 to discuss mask policy within the Stamford Public Schools District. The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom. According to the agenda, the board will discuss and possibly repeal the current masking policy, as well as making tweaks to visitor policy and language about the use of buildings, grounds and equipment. The full agenda and link for the Zoom meeting can be found here. Connecticut lawmakers recently voted to extend Gov. Ned Lamont's executive orders until Feb. 28, which includes the school mask mandate. Beginning March 1, masking policy will be left up to individual school districts. COVID-19 cases have been improving both locally in Stamford and around the state in recent weeks, following a surge to begin the new year. According to the most recent update from SPS last Friday, there were 68 new COVID-19 cases reported from Feb. 4 to Feb. 11. Last Friday, Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons announced the citywide indoor mask mandate would be lifted Feb. 16. Businesses can now set their own policy. Masks will still be required in hospitals, nursing homes, health care and childcare facilities, municipal buildings and on public transit.
