OAKLAND, CA — A young man was arrested following a fatal SUV crash early Monday morning on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland, California Highway Patrol officials said. At 12:30 a.m., CHP officers tried to stop a black Chevrolet Suburban on Highway 580 at Fruitvale Avenue because they believed it was traveling at an unsafe speed and apparently had no license plates. But the SUV's driver, identified as 30-year-old Oakland man Deville Daggs, allegedly sped away and CHP officers began pursuing him. At MacArthur Boulevard, Daggs got off the freeway and then allegedly drove back on heading west in the eastbound lanes. CHP officers called off their pursuit. About a minute later, CHP officials said, the Chevrolet crashed head-on into a Honda minivan on Highway 580 just west of 35th Avenue. The Honda's driver, a man in his 30s, died and a woman suffered major injuries in the crash. The woman was taken to Highland Hospital. Daggs allegedly ran from the crash and was taken into custody by Oakland police and Alameda County sheriff's deputies. Daggs suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital for care. CHP officials said he will be taken to Santa Rita Jail once he is released from the hospital. He may be charged with several felony offenses.
