Good Tuesday morning Connecticut, It looks like there is increasing confidence that there will be a rain and wind storm on Thursday for Connecticut. The National Weather Service posted an updated hazardous weather outlook statement for southern Connecticut, saying, "Confidence is increasing in potential of wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph Thursday night into early Friday morning as a strong frontal system tracks through the area. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph are possible, mainly for Long Island and southeastern CT." The rain should end early Friday and then sunshine dominates in the afternoon hours. Apartment building destroyed in fire An apartment building at 42 Warner St. in Hamden was destroyed in a major fire Monday night, which has displaced dozens of families, WTNH News 8 reported. No one was injured in the blaze. The fire was reported around 7 p.m. Monday, and was fully extinguished in the early morning hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Hamden Fire Department made numerous rescues, WFSB 3 TV reported. Fire Chief Garry Merwede told WFSB 3 TV that the "fire spread so quickly, because it got into the common attic space, fire was running above the apartments without the knowledge of the residents inside, so we had to break down doors and get them out. The apartments were rapidly filling with smoke." The American Red Cross said in a news release that it is assisting 15 families – 32 adults – 14 children after the Hamden fire. Those affected will connect with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan. (Read More at News 8 and Read More at WFSB 3 TV). Lamont releases new statement concerning the end of his emergency orders Lamont released the following statement regarding today's expiration of his authority to issue emergency orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic: "Today marks a new phase in our state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are by no means declaring mission accomplished in our efforts to stop the spread of this virus, but we are acknowledging that this is a long-term situation that will need a long-term response. Since the beginning of this pandemic, my administration has been able to work collaboratively with the legislature to swiftly enact the essential emergency orders that have been in the best interest of public safety and health. During this time, we built the structure that is supporting our state's response to this virus. Going forward, while our authority to issue these emergency orders is expiring, I have no doubt that we will be able to faithfully continue collaborating with the legislature to enact policies that keep our state safe to the greatest extent possible." Lamont declared public health and civil preparedness emergencies on March 10, 2020, which gave him the authority to issue emergency orders. Under an agreement reached with the Connecticut General Assembly, that authority expires today.
