STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A car chase that began in Stafford County ended outside of the Fredericksburg Nationals' stadium on Monday night. The Stafford County Sheriff's Office said that a driver drove through a red light and fled a subsequent traffic stop. The incident began around 9 p.m. on Monday night. A deputy in Stafford County said they saw a driver continue through a red light near the 500 block of Warrenton Road. Police identified the driver as Star Murphy, according to the report from the sheriff's office. The deputy claimed that Murphy said he was late for a Valentine's Day meeting. The deputy also reported that Murphy refused to exit the vehicle and then sped away. Murphy continued northbound on Warrenton Road and ignored multiple traffic lights, the sheriff's office said. He then made a U-turn and took the entrance ramp to southbound Interstate 95, according to the police report. Deputies attempted to execute a rolling road block on I-95. One deputy pulled in front of Murphy's car, but Murphy turned swerved into another police vehicle, damaging the passenger's side. Authorities claimed that Murphy reached speeds of 100 miles per hour during the chase. Murphy eventually exited the highway onto Route 3 and continued toward Central Park. Authorities claimed that Murphy continued driving recklessly as deputies intentionally rammed his vehicle in an effort to end the chase. "Murphy eventually struck a curb, launching his vehicle, like a FredNats foul ball, into the parking lot of FredNats Ballpark, disabling the vehicle," the sheriff's office said in their report. In a Facebook post about the incident, the minor league baseball team said "Sheesh, somebody tell this guy parking is only $5." Murphy did not immediately surrender to police after the crash, according to the sheriff's office. Police said that Murphy walked away from his car and began to dig into his pocket. Deputies believed that he may have been reaching for a weapon, according to the report. Stafford County's police K-9, Titan, was released and helped apprehend Murphy. Murphy was treated at a nearby hospital for the dog bite and charged with eluding, obstruction, attempted aggravated malicious wounding, hit and run, reckless driving and the traffic light charges. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Have a story idea? Email me at [email protected] with tips, questions, comments, or concerns.
