Good morning, people of Salt Lake City! Joseph Peterson here with the latest edition of the Salt Lake City Daily. First, today's weather: Partly sunny. High: 44 Low: 29. Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today: Michael Brandon Demarre is the name of the man who tried to open an emergency exit while mid-air on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon. 32-year-old Demarre is now in trouble with the U.S. Attorney's office, as you might expect. According to the charging documents, after landing in Portland, Demarre told police he did it "so other passengers would video him, thereby giving him the opportunity to share his thoughts on COVID-19 vaccines." (fox13now.com) The Utah Symphony and Opera have now changed their accessibility policies after a Salt Lake City man, Carson Tueller, tried to keep his wheelchair close to him during a recent performance. Typically ushers remove wheelchairs to another room, citing a fire safety issue, but on this particular night, a patron sitting nearby became belligerent at Tueller for wanting his wheelchair close to him, saying disparaging comments like "you don't get to pull a handicapped card everywhere." Tueller left the event as soon as he could get his wheelchair returned to him and posted an Instagram video explaining what happened, which ultimately sparked the conversation around the policy change. (KSL.com) If you thought avocado prices were already on the rise, the closing down of avocado imports from Mexico this weekend may send the price of toast's favorite topping into the stratosphere. For Salt Lake City restaurants who rely on best-sellers like guacamole, this makes profit-making a tricky business. It's leading one restauranteur couple—the owners of Monarca and Santo Taco who use hundreds of avocados every day—to consider ways to make guacamole substitutes with other ingredients like zucchini.
