BROOKFIELD, CT — The Brookfield Police will make their second attempt at their first Annual Penguin Plunge. The 2021 plunge was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Plunge Candlewood, which benefits Special Olympics Connecticut, will be held on Mar. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Brookfield Town Beach, 460 Candlewood Lake Road. Parking will be across the street at Cadigan Park. Check-in will begin at 11 a.m. The event supports more than 12,000 athletes of all abilities who participate in the sports training and competitions Special Olympics Connecticut offers year-round. A $50 Market Place Tavern - Brookfield gift card will be awarded to the three participants wearing the best costumes. Participants must be at least 8 years old, and need to raise a minimum of $100. In addition to the awards for top fundraisers and best costume, plungers receive incentive prizes for their fundraising efforts. Spectators are welcome. Registration is online here, and both live and "virtual" options are available. All are invited to participate in the Plunge, including individuals, friends and families, and teams representing schools, businesses, organizations, and clubs. Warming stations, refreshments, and cornhole will be provided, and the police Emergency Services Unit Dive Team will be on scene and in the water for safety.
