Here are the top stories in Denver today: Denver rents hit $2,000 per month. Across Colorado, monthly rental prices are up almost 22 percent year-over-year. (FOX31)Colorado crime on the rise, state legislator says a bill in the works to combat it. FBI statistics show that the crime rate in Colorado rose by almost 9 percent between 2019 and 2020. That's the fifth-highest increase in the country. A state bill has been introduced that prohibits judges from releasing defendants charged with violent crimes. (CBS4) Governor Polis announces he's running for a second term. Polis and his running mate, Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera, launched their election campaign in Pueblo on Tuesday. (Patch)College students struggle with food insecurity. With with food prices nationwide jumping 6.3 percent in 2021, several thousand MSU Denver students are faced with food-insecurity. "The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as having 'limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.'"(RED)Fewer people moved to Colorado in 2021. Overall population growth in Colorado has slowed, too. Net migration, a slowdown in births and an increase in people dying are contributing to a decrease in population growth as well. (9News) Environment: State regulators set to approve a new permit for Suncor refinery. The move to renew the permit with almost no new restrictions has some residents and environmental justice advocates fuming. Advocates say that the "community will continue to live with the fear of deadly chemicals in the air."
