ANNAPOLIS, MD — The arrestee in an Annapolis shooting told police that he fired the shots after an intruder entered his home, a press released said. Officers said they found more than two dozen spent shell casings on the scene after two minors were hospitalized in the Saturday shooting. A 14-year-old boy was shot twice in his lower extremities, authorities said. Doctors have since released him from the hospital. A 10 year-old girl was shot once in her back, police said. She was still hospitalized and in stable condition as of Monday. Officers announced Sunday that they arrested the accused man after he turned himself in without incident. Authorities identified the arrestee as 41-year-old John Estep of Annapolis. Estep called the police around 6:07 p.m. Saturday to report a group of juveniles banging on his door in the 100 block of Obery Court, the release said. The minors were gone by the time officers arrived. Authorities said an anonymous neighbor reported a group of juveniles kicking a door at 7:12 p.m. Police got a call seven minutes later for shots fired in the area. Estep told officers that somebody entered his home after kicking the door and forcing it open. The accused man fired shots at the male intruder's lower extremities, authorities said. The resident also fired shots at a group of people at the side window, police said. Estep then exited the home, fired one shot into the ground and left the area. Officers said they found the wounded minors around 7:39 p.m. in the nearby unit block of Monument Street. Investigators said there was damage consistent with breaking and entering on Estep's door. Detectives said they found: 25 spent shell casings inside the homeOne shell casing on the porch One casing further outside, but it is unclear if that it is related to this shooting Maryland's court database showed Wednesday at 1:38 p.m. that Estep faces these seven charges: Two counts of reckless endangermentTwo counts of first-degree assaultOne count of carrying a loaded handgun on his personTwo counts of using a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure A judge released Estep Sunday on personal recognizance until his trial, the court records said.
