One class focused on painting a Sankofa bird, a metaphor in the Black community for "looking back at the past while moving forward," reported KCCI Des Moines. Owners James and Bridget Neely also see their business as contributing to mental health in the Black community, as painting in a relaxing atmosphere can be "extremely therapeutic." "That makes this even more important because we're now giving back in a different way," Bridget Neely told reporters. "We're now creating a space where people can ... feel comfortable." (KCCI Des Moines)Over the weekend, feline fever took over Des Moines as owners and breeders gathered at the state fairgrounds for the Allbreed Cat Show. Over 160 cats of 40 different breeds competed in the event. Jill Singer brought her cat Tagalong, an oriental shorthair who earned "best cat" recognition from five separate judges. The competitive kitty is currently ranked fourth among all spayed and neutered cats in the Midwest by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) (Local 5 - weareiowa.com)On Sunday, a West Des Moines woman was arrested in connection with a Feb. 8 incident in which she allegedly struck her boyfriend in the head, opening a 1- to 2-inch laceration. Talia Sophia Reese, 23, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness.
