A New Bill Penzey commentary concerning NFL and Race

Can you take a moment and read the following? “The spice trade invented capitalism because the risks and rewards of supplying people with tasty bits to add to the meals they gave away were more costly than any individual could bear. Never forget that capitalism was created so we could better express our humanity and caring for others. It is in our humanity that capitalism’s greatest rewards will always be found. Rarely has the humanity at the heart of capitalism been better understood or better put on display than with Dr. Dre’s brilliantly conceived and executed halftime show at Sunday night’s game. To take what had been, up to this point, as he so dramatically called out as an all-white stage, and in just twelve minutes of genius forever change that stage was a remarkable moment in American history. To have it all peak with Eminem taking that Colin Kaepernick-inspired knee to call out the racial injustice of our justice system was one of the finest examples of not missing an opportunity ever. And that the NFL has come around to understanding its role in that injustice and was willing to give Dr. Dre this stage to address it is a turning point for America that we’ve been working to see happen for years. Sunday night the NFL stopped being about those who are angered by athletes speaking out against racial injustice. Sunday night the NFL became about those welcomed in by speaking for equality. Sunday night was a very good night for America and for the future of everyone everywhere. It’s no coincidence the Republican Party’s modern embrace of open “textbook” racism aligns so closely with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow unlimited political spending. Money has no conscience. Money feels no guilt or shame about using any method necessary to achieve its goals, and has had no qualms at all about pushing racism right out front to achieve its desires. So in this time of unlimited political spending, the right has embraced seemingly unlimited racism as well. The fight against that embrace is the struggle of our time. So we work one voter at a time, one election at a time until the day where we can finally bring decency and humanity back to a majority on the Supreme Court so the stranglehold corporations now have on our democracy can once again be removed. This struggle will be long, and hard, and saying we can get this done in a decade might be wildly, overly optimistic. But the thing is, this does not have to be hard. The reality is the American consumer has always had the power to end the damage of unlimited political spending whenever it wants to, pretty much overnight. The Wizard of Oz. The struggle, journey, and work Dorothy had to do to get the wizard to return her to her home in Kansas was overwhelming. But the reality was she had the ruby slippers all along and with them she always had the ability to return home just by admitting there was no place like home. Unlimited political spending can only do damage as long as the American consumer allows the businesses where they spend money to stay on the sidelines of the struggle for civil and human rights. So much of what our last five years at Penzeys has been about cheerleading businesses to get off of those sidelines and getting them to understand that the demographics of the American consumer and demographics of the Republican voter are two circles that barely intersect. If we as consumers make businesses pick a side, the truth is there’s only one side they can pick and stay in business. Equality is all about growing, and connecting, and spreading by word-of-mouth about supporting what deserves support. Inequality is an old idea and it’s spent. To see the NFL realize this in such a big way Sunday night and turn so abruptly was remarkable. And that they were so well-rewarded by a surge in viewership means this is the shape of things to come. Dr. Dre and his musical family just pushed America forward in a way so few others could. So much to be proud of here. It was a great night.” The guy is quite literate, and his company has some great products, check it out.
