MURRIETA, CA — Teresa West, a single mom in Murrieta, has had her share of struggles. It was the kindness of neighbors who brought her groceries in her time of need. And after Patch recently asked readers to share stories of how kindnesses has spread in their neighborhoods, West was among those happy to share their memories. "When I was a single mom raising two kids with little to no money, my neighbor put a basket of supplies and food on my doorstep," West wrote on Facebook. Inside the basket were toilet paper, paper towels, canned and boxed food. "Of course, they did not want me to know who it was from, but I knew it was them," she added. "They do not understand how much I needed it." Thursday is Random Acts of Kindness Day. "Make kindness the norm" — known as #MakeKindnessTheNorm on social media — is this year's theme. Paying attention to the needs of others, as West's neighbors did for her, is genuine kindness. West said she had just spent $30 on groceries, arriving home late. She carried her kids in the house and forgot about the groceries in her trunk over that hot summer night. "People don't realize the little things they do is a big thing to someone else," she wrote. "I will never forget that neighbor. Thank you." In Murrieta during the pandemic, neighbors also helped out Clare Oswald. She said her friends brought homemade baked goods. "They made me fidillo soup when we had COVID," Oswald wrote. Rachelle Williams also thanked her neighbors for leaving food and little things when she was sick. Brigette Chavis said neighbors took her to the hospital while her husband was deployed. "Only after knowing them in passing," she said. "I owe them my life. I was super grateful for such kind people." Richard Rowan told Patch about neighbors who helped him during the pandemic, as well. "They grocery shop for my wife and me, as we are 82 with compromised immune systems," he said, expressing his thanks. Smaller acts of kindness are also as valuable. Maria Torre-Sabir thanked her neighbors for taking her kid to school. According to Justin Meier, sharing time and friendship is the ultimate kindness between neighbors. "I have great neighbors," Meier wrote. "They bring me tamales, tacos, beers, etc. I try to reciprocate when I can. Wouldn't trade my neighbors for anyone else." Read all of the many beautiful comments of kindnesses in your neighborhood. While some are funny, most show how a little act goes long between neighbors.
