JOLIET, IL — The Illinois Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday that the Jackson Street Bridge will be closed for at least two months, with an anticipated reopening in late April.
The closure is necessary for the installation of new aerial cables and control system, along with various tender house upgrades, IDOT indicated.
The work is part of an ongoing project to upgrade the downtown Joliet movable bridges that will allow them to be controlled from one central location, creating a more efficient system of lifting and lowering the bridges and increasing safety for pedestrians, motorists and marine traffic, according to IDOT.
A detour will direct traffic to Scott Street, Ruby Street and Broadway Street.
On Monday, the Jefferson Street Bridge will be reopened to traffic after being closed for repairs since June 1, 2020.
