Fremont Chemical Fire Extinguished, Shelter In Place Lifted

FREMONT, CA — A chemical fire at Air Liquide in Fremont, a company that supplies industrial gases, was reported just before 7:30 Wednesday morning. Employees had tried to put it out themselves, but were unsuccessful so they pulled the fire alarm and evacuated the building. The first Fremont Fire Department firefighters who arrived at the company saw smoke coming out of an air ventilator. Employees informed crews that product and possibly equipment were on fire in an isolated room with unknown chemicals. The product fire burned itself out. No injuries were reported. A shelter in place order was given by the the fire department Incident Commander as a precaution in case a chemical release was detected, and the street was closed. The Fremont Fire Department Special Operations Task Force could not verify that a chemical spill had occured or that hazardous chemicals had escaped from a building. The shelter in place order was lifted at 12:45 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
