SAN Diego, CA — A Fallbrook man was killed by a hit and run driver Wednesday morning as he was laying down cones on the (110) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
The victim, a 48-year-old Caltrans subcontractor, died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers received reports of a person down on the right hand side of the freeway near West Third Street at about 12:15 a.m., according to the CHP.
The man was putting out cones to close a lane when he was struck. Authorities believe his killer was driving a dark-colored SUV, and they are looking for a vehicle with front-end damage.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to this subcontractor's family," Caltrans tweeted. "Please remember to move over and slow down when you see emergency vehicles. October also marks the 10th anniversary of California's `Move Over' law expanding to include Caltrans vehicles."
According to the agency, at least 189 Caltrans workers have died while toiling on the state's roads since 1921.
