Press release from Macomb Community College: In gratitude to those who continued to work in essential industries during the state shutdown this past spring, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has introduced the Futures for Frontliners program. Through the program, residents without a college degree who worked at least half-time in front-line positions during the height of the COVID-19 crisis are eligible for free tuition at their local community college. "We are indebted to those who left the safety of their homes during the height of pandemic to ensure that the rest of us had access to the essential services, groceries, medications and products that we needed to continue to shelter at home," said James O. Sawyer IV, president, Macomb Community College. "I can think of no better way to demonstrate our thanks to these dedicated front-line workers who risked their own health than to help position them and their families with a pathway to a better future through education and training in high-demand fields." Individuals without a high school diploma or equivalency are eligible for services to help them prepare for and complete this credential, either prior to or while dual enrolled at a community college. Applications to the program are being accepted beginning today, Sept. 10, through Dec. 31, 2020. Other program details include: Eligibility: All essential workers without a college degree or high school equivalency who worked at least half time in 11 of the 13 weeks from April 1 through June 30, 2020. Start: Participants may begin classes any time in 2021, beginning in January. Class Commitment: Full or part time Information: Macomb.edu/frontliners To Apply: Michigan.gov/frontliners This press release was produced by Macomb Community College.
