Press release from the City of Carlsbad: December 8, 2020 Planning Commission Vacancies The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling two scheduled vacancies on the City of Carlsbad Planning Commission for four year terms. Applications for this volunteer position are available on the city's website or in the City Clerk's Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Jan. 4, 2021. The Planning Commission advises and makes recommendations to the City Council on matters regarding land use and development within the city. Duties are as follows: Implementation of the General Plan, Local Coastal Program and Zoning Ordinance: Makes recommendations to the City Council regarding implementation and updating of the General Plan, Local Coastal Program and Zoning Ordinance. When needed, provides recommendations to the Council regarding policy issues that affect long-range planning for the city. Review of development projects: Provides timely recommendations to the City Council when the Planning Department has completed its review of a development project for compliance with the General Plan and all zoning, subdivision and environmental ordinances. Provides a forum for public input into the review of development projects. Provides clear, concise findings to the City Council to support the recommendations of the Commission. Implementation of the Growth Management Program: Provides report to the City Council on the local facilities management plans once the Planning Department has completed detailed review. Pro-active capacity: Identifies potential problems and opportunities facing the city. Suggests special studies when appropriate. Committees: Serves on special committees or task forces as requested by the City Council. The Planning Commission has seven members. The Mayor and City Council Members nominate one individual to serve on the commission for a term coinciding with the term of the Council Member making the appointment. The Mayor shall nominate two additional individuals to serve on the Commission. All nominations shall be subject to ratification by a majority vote of the City Council, pursuant to Section 2.15.050 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code. There are three ex officious members who shall be the city engineer, city attorney and city planner. The current vacancies will fulfill the terms present to December 2024. The City Council Members for Districts 2 and 4 will each nominate an individual to serve on the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission normally meets at the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Normally meetings begin at 6 p.m. at the City Council Chamber at Carlsbad City Hall, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive however during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission has been meeting virtually at 3 p.m. Applicants must be Carlsbad residents and registered to vote in Carlsbad. Planning Commission members are required to complete two hours of ethics training every two years and file a Fair Political Practices Commission Form 700 annual statement of economic interests. This statement, which is a public document, details a person's financial interests such as property ownership and business ownership.
