Join GCPL and award-winning author Vanessa Riley as she discusses her historical novel, Island Queen.
Island Queen is a remarkable, historical novel based on the incredible true-life story of Dorothy "Doll" Kirwan Thomas. Born into slavery she bought her freedom from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth as a merchant, luxury hotel owner, and Dominica and Barbados sugar plantation owner. She rose to power against all odds, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color.
Island Queen has been selected to become a Netflix series with Bridgerton's director Julie Anne Robinson
