DHHS In-service “Addressing youth mental health & wellbeing” with Dr Irena Glover
Child welfare workers encounter youth who deal with the impact of family history, past trauma, and daily life stress which leads to mental health problems. This mental health issue can often be attributed to negative response to placement, typical adolescent behaviors, or personality trait. The first step is recognizing the mental health issues; a simple assessment can help a worker gain better understanding of the child’s mental well-being. The next step is to determine if the youth needs a referral for mental health services or just more mental well-being supports in the placement setting. This training provides some basic understanding of youth mental health issues, basic skills to assess those mental health issues, and understanding of levels of care youth mental health practice: development of self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-efficacy.
