Here are the top three stories today in Grand Rapids: Mel Trotter Ministries has completed the first phase of its shelter renovation at 225 Commerce Ave. The $14.9 million renovation project was commissioned to address homelessness and is expected to be completed by Feb. 21. The shelter has been designed to address the hardships that unhoused people have experienced before moving into a facility, and therefore offers privacy, space, and updated services. (grbj.com) A Grand Rapids couple celebrated Valentine's Day in the most heartwarming way. Locals Tracy Gary and Holly Werlein-Gary met and fell in love along their own transplant journeys back in 2018. As of Valentine's Day 2022, the couple has raised $127,000 out of a $350,000 dollar goal towards building a transplant house in Grand Rapids, which would build community support for people just like them. (WZZM13.com) Patients at DeVos Children's Hospital were treated to a Special Valentine's Day delivery on Monday. Audrey Wendt, an ER Nurse at the hospital, raised $11,000 through a Facebook group she created. The funds raised were used to purchase blankets, stuffed animals, treats and more than 500 balloons for the children at the hospital.
