TUCSON, AZ — A man who was already in the Pima County Jail for multiple felony charges is now accused of murder after one of the men injured in a wreck he's accused of causing died on Saturday, according to police.
Michael Aaron Roman, 41, is now charged on suspicion of 2nd-degree murder for the death of James Vernon Ammons, 61, according to police.
Ammons died Saturday from injuries he received in a Feb. 6 wreck, police said. A man and a woman, in addition to Roman and Ammons were also injured in the wreck, according to police.
The wreck happened around 10:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the intersection of South Park Avenue and East Drexel Road, according to police.
Police accused Roman, who was headed north on Park Avenue in an Infiniti, of speeding and running a red light before hitting the GMC pickup truck that Ammons and two others were inside. Roman is also accused of driving under the influence.
All three people in the pickup were ejected and found on the road, according to police. They were all taken to Banner University Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries, police said. None of them were wearing seatbelts, police said.
Ammons is accused of fleeing the wreck, but was found hiding nearby, police said. He was also taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail following his release from the hospital, police said.
