SMITHTOWN, NY — Peter Russo has come home to serve as an assistant principal at Great Hollow Middle School, the Smithtown Central School District announced.
Russo, a Smithtown resident, officially began his new role on Monday. He joined the Smithtown Central School District after working since 2016 as the coordinator of special education for Long Beach High School and Middle School in Nassau County.
In that role, Russo managed parent concerns for students with disabilities, served as instructional leader for all special education programs and supervised 23 teachers, 51 teaching assistants, two school psychologists, three social workers, and two speech pathologists.
Russo had previously worked as an assistant principal for four years with Middle School 88 in Brooklyn. He began his education career as a special education teacher at Louis Armstrong Middle School in Queens.
Russo earned a master's in education for special education from Queens College and a master's in administration for public administration from Baruch College.
Cindy Nocero recently retired as an assistant principal at Great Hollow Middle School.
Two of Russo's children currently attend Smithtown schools, with a third soon to enter.
"I'm very excited to join the Smithtown Central School District and to be a member of the Great Hollow Middle School family," Russo stated. "I look forward to working with staff, students, parents and all stakeholders to enhance the opportunities that await our children."
