When I was just a kid, Nixon was one of my heroes

and I couldn't believe he had done any of the things they said he'd done because he was the President and the President just had to be a good man for us to be a good country and America just had to be the best country. I was very naive as most kids are. And I wasn't old enough to understand that there are a lot of bad people and a lot of them go into politics. And that even the good ones that go into politics often get corrupted a little at a time. Politics has a way of bringing out the weaknesses in people. Looking at the Republican party today, I see a lot of the same things. Wanting to believe that Trump is decent and honest despite the tsunami of evidence because people strongly identify the President with the country and the country with their own identity. This imaginary connection is so strong that the GOP has become like a Mafia family where you better not ever say anything against the family and particularly against the godfather. A total unwillingness to accept criticism of any kind is narcissism. We're in a situation where the worst kind of narcissist brought out the same personality weakness in an entire political party. They don't want to hear anything negative and will immediately disregard anything that pokes holes in their beliefs. I attribute this to their upbringing in Christianity. I was brought up in the church and the Christian church does all it can to stop you from asking too many questions and particularly from reading about any religion or philosophy books that would provide conflicting viewpoints. They tell you it would lead to you becoming a heretic and spending eternity in hell. That's a pretty big threat to lay on a pre-teen kid and it tends to stick in the subconscious a long, long time. So what can be done? The resolution will probably come in the almost certainly upcoming trials of Trump and his corrupt family and friends. Just like I was certain that Nixon was being railroaded when the Watergate trial began, seeing the vast amount of evidence from the vast number of credible sources will eventually bring the GOP back to reality. And they'll pay attention to the trial because Trump is their hero just like Nixon was mine. And just like me, the entire GOP will probably become a bit more jaded about people in general and political leaders in particular after the trial is over and Trump is inevitably convicted. Nixon broke the trust in government for an entire generation and we never did regain the position we were in during the early 60's when people thought Kennedy and politics held solutions and weren't just another part of the problem. There will be a new normal that emerges but people's trust in their fellow citizens has been irreparably damaged. We now know the KKK never went away. It just went underground and probably the only thing we can do about it is drive it back there. There is a group of people that will always hide behind religion or politics to justify their hatred of anyone that is different from them. It has been that way for a very long time. Probably for as long as there has been variations in how humans look and what they believe.
