DAVIDSON, NC — As returns continued to come in across the U.S. Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump's unofficial victory in North Carolina Tuesday night was in line with his past performance in 2016, according to state voting day. Comparing the two presidential races, Trump's share of the statewide vote rose slightly from 49.83 percent in 2016 to 49.98 percent in the Nov. 3 election. As of Wednesday morning, Trump maintained a narrow lead in North Carolina over former Vice President Joe Biden. Unofficial returns showed Trump beating Biden by a margin of about 76,000 votes, however, about 117,000 absentee ballots remained outstanding, according to state election officials. In North Carolina, ballots that are post marked Nov. 3 and received by Nov. 12 will be counted. So how did Trump's support in the Town of Davidson compare with his vote totals in 2016, when he was running against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? According to the unofficial returns from North Carolina State Board of Elections, Trump gained support in Davidson in 2020 In 2020 at Precinct #127 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Trump claimed about 54 percent of votes, up from 50 percent in 2016. In 2020 at Precinct #206 at Davidson K-8 located at 635 South Street, Trump claimed about 38 percent of votes, up from 32 percent in 2016. At the county level, Trump had less support Tuesday in Mecklenburg. According to unofficial results, Biden claimed nearly 67 percent of votes, compared to 32 percent for Trump.
