She uses her paintbrush to talk about climate change on a broad level with a focus on the value, habits, functions, and beauty of specific species. Before photographing an area, often a National or State Park, I apply exercises from figure drawing - timed gesture, 1-and 2-step contour - to identify the feeling inherent in a scene of water, rocks, and trees; I paint primarily in the studio. The result is a style I call American Modernist, with others seeing a resonance with Finnish jugendstil painter Askeli Gallen-Kallela. My landscapes, made primarily in acrylic, occasionally combined with other media, are well represented on my website. Read Leni's full artist statement here. 🎨 Kathy Karlson Kathy J. Karlson, M.A., Ph.D., Artist in Residence at Greenbelt Community Center in Maryland Paintings in more than 50-60 private collections. Exhibited in juried shows, at Johns Hopkins, Montpelier, Wilson Gallery, Torpedo Factory, and many others. Karlson’s paintings reflect layered sources of inspiration, from her interest in abstract expressionism and her upbringing near the prairie, to her years in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Oils were her first choice in paints until she began using watercolors and water-based pigments. Transitioning from traditional styles, she became more of an abstract painter. Various workshops and classes were to influence her choices of materials and subject matter. Her style varies continuously as she experiments and explores, surprising her viewers as she develops something new. My mother had a wonderful sense of design. She taught me that art can have deep personal meaning. From my grandmother I learned that I can make art anywhere and nature is a worthwhile subject. Many other teachers have helped me along the way as well. I am drawn to the horizon line as a means to establish a sense of calm within the drawing that is otherwise filled with movement and chaos. Stones or shells serve to elicit a feeling of stability and connection to the earth. It is important for me to show the artist’s hand in each drawing. The marks on the drawings are meant to elicit a sense of writing and communication, often chaotically but other times used as a formal means of creating movement. I use my photographs of the beach as inspirations for my drawings. Read Heidi's full artist statement here. All artwork on display at Hera Hub DC is available for purchase.
