Training for teachers, sponsored by 785 Arts, Arts Connect and Onyx Wellness Cafe
Two-day workshop with tribal member and cultural arts specialist from the Cherokee Nation, Lisa LaRue-Baker. A great opportunity to learn language, history and a skill to teach your students!
This workshop takes place on 2 consecutive Saturday, and is free of charge, including snacks and lunch!
you will learn:
History of the Cherokee Nation and in the evolution of basketmaking
The traditional story of the basket
Language: various words to greet your students, and introduce baskets
Materials - traditional and contemporary and how to handle them
Different techniques for different age groups.
and…..
you will make several baskets of your own!
workshop includes hands on instruction, and you will be asked to choose 1 student to bring to the workshop on the last afternoon to instruct.
All teachers and children will be in group photo and teachers will be given a certificate.
this workshop is sponsored in part by a grant from Arts Connect, as well as Onyx Wellness Cafe and 785 Arts, LLC and will be held at 785 Arts studio and classroom, located in the historic Columbian Building in downtown Topeka. Ride the 1888 manual elevator, hear some fun stories about the building, enjoy a sack lunch at Evergy Plaza, have healthy protein bite snacks, and learn traditional culture from a tribal member. 785 Arts Gallery & Studio is an authentic Native American art gallery offering cultural arts classes. Native Woman owned, the studio and classroom is located at the historic Columbian Building, downtown Topeka.
