CHARLOTTE, NC — North Carolina's tally of COVID-19 cases grew by 4,479 new cases since Sunday, increasing the state's total to 483,647 known cases, according to state public health officials. At least 16 new deaths were reported Monday, increasing the state's death toll to 6,240. At least 115 state residents lost their lives to the virus since Friday, according to data released by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. As of Dec. 21, about 11 percent of tests conducted in the state were positive, up from 10.5 reported Friday. Hospitalizations also rose to 2,817 patients, at least 69 more than reported Sunday. According to DHHS data, 1,975 staffed intensive care unit beds — or about 82 percent of the supply reported in North Carolina — and about 74 percent of the state's 20,843 staffed inpatient hospital beds were in use as of Monday.
