Join us in celebrating Indigenous community, culture and resistance. Our Mills College Pow Wow is open to everyone and is a longstanding community event supported by the Bay Area’s Native community. Holding the biennial Pow Wow is a part of the commitment by Indigenous students, faculty and staff, including our co-sponsors, Ethnic Studies and the Indigenous Women’s Alliance, to support our urban Indigenous communities. We are happy to return in 2022 after a hiatus due to COVID in 2021. This year’s Pow Wow marks the eighth Mills College Pow Wow led by the Ethnic Studies and our community planning committee. Our Pow Wow Committee is dedicated to continuing Indigenous culture and traditions at Mills and in the larger Indigenous communities. As a special feature of our 2022 Pow Wow, we are proud to feature The Indigenous Red Market, an exciting enterprise here in Oakland, California that brings together Indigenous artists, entrepreneurs, and vendors every first Sunday of the month in Oakland. They are dedicated to informing our communities about issues important to the local and global Indigenous communities, and their market features key opportunities for community empowerment and involvement. The Indigenous Red Market is a unique Native American event that incorporates: entrepreneurship, healthy Indigenous foods, and cultural entertainment that features a range of talents. We welcome IRM, community vendors and guest performers for our Mills College Pow Wow 2022, and their commitment to community education, with speakers on key Indigenous issues, and community event announcements. At the center of our Mills Pow Wow are songs and dances of Indigenous peoples throughout North America. Contest prizes are offered for northern and southern traditional and fancy/jingle dances (watch here and on our Pow Wow website for a complete list of contests and prizes, as well as our Head Staff listing). Indigenous jewelry and textiles from community vendors will be available, along with Native foods. We invite you to come and support our Native communities and join us in this family-friendly celebration. All Drums Welcome. Please bring your own seating.
