Gardening with the Masters Spring Event! Featuring four main sessions and 6 table talks! Price for full day is $25 (includes lunch). Augustana University requires that all participants wear masks. Individually boxed lunches include a sandwich entrée, fruit, bagged chips, brownie, and bottled water. Lunch selection is made with your ticket purchase. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Door prize drawings throughout the day – must be present to win! SDSU Extension Master Gardeners may earn 5.5 hours continuing education credit for attending all sessions of this event! What plants have inspired your gardening journey? Whether we find them in cultivated gardens or wild landscapes, many of us can picture specific plants that are seared to memorable moments and have inspired a love of nature and gardening. Join Dr. Kristine Lang for a discussion of the plants that have inspired her throughout her formative years and career. Attendees will walk away with gardening ideas as well as inspiration for their next outdoor hike in the woods or prairie. 10:00 Break, Table Talks 10:30 Session 2 - Gardening for Soil Health presented by Kent Vlieger, State Soil Health Specialist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Till, fertilize, spray, plant, water, and repeat. Stop the cycle! Kent will discuss how to manage your garden to regenerate soil and grow healthier plants and better produce. 11:30 Lunch, Table Talks 12:45 Session 3 - How Not to Kill Trees presented by Dr. John Ball, SDSU Professor, SDSU Extension Forestry Specialist & South Dakota Department of Agriculture Forest Health Specialist. Have you been wondering about how deep to plant your new tree; how to determine where the grafted portion is, or whether you should trim and stake your newly planted tree? Do you need ideas for new trees since the emerald ash borer has arrived in South Dakota? These, and many more questions will be answered in this session. 1:45 Break 2:00 Session 4 - Vertical & Small Space Gardening presented by Brett Owens, Instructor of Horticulture and the Director of the Local Foods Education Center at South Dakota State University. How can we get the most out of our garden space? Grow up, not out!
