FRANKLIN, WI — A member of the Franklin Finance Committee and the Franklin Community Development Authority is expected to be removed from his posts after a criminal complaint accused him of possessing child pornography. An order of removal from the mayor of Franklin was signed on Feb. 11 and is set for Common Council presentation on Tuesday. Curtis L. Schmitt, 38, of Franklin, was charged in January with three counts of possession of child pornography in Milwaukee County Court, according to online records. Considered innocent until proven guilty by conviction, Schmitt was accused of downloading child pornography through Snapchat, according to a criminal complaint. A cyber tip helped Wisconsin Department of Justice investigators to uncover an online file hosting service that Schmitt is accused of uploading pornographic images of children to, according to a criminal complaint. According to the criminal complaint, Schmitt told investigators he sometimes downloaded child pornography from Snapchat and then uploaded it to the file hosting account so it could be reported to Snapchat. When confronted with images found in the file hosting service, Schmitt told investigators the people pictured appeared to be children, but he claimed to not remember the specific photos, the criminal complaint said.
