LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach residents weren't the only ones who felt the heat of the Emerald Fire after it broke early Thursday morning, burning almost 1,500 acres of Laguna Beach land and threatening countless homes. The Laguna Beach Animal Shelter lost power while the fire was raging due to high winds, leaving staff in the dark without any computers or phones while the emergency alarm blared. In need of a helping hand, Laguna Beach Animal Shelter staff then contacted the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center for assistance, the center reported. The power was soon restored, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center reported. As of Sunday, the Emerald Fire was 90 percent contained thanks to the work of the Orange County Fire Authority, the Laguna Beach Police Department and CalFire, the City of Laguna Beach reported.
