Press release from the City of Greensboro: 02/13/2022 11:59 PM About the Artist Kym Cooper is a writer, educator and visual artist. She has a BFA from American University; a Master of Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and a JD from Howard University's School of Law. She has published a book of poetry entitled "Another Side" and "Anyway and Grasshopper," a children's book. She has also written articles for Essence magazine. Her poem "Pilar" was published in the Christian Science Monitor. Cooper is a cubist surrealist who uses mixed media to create paintings and sculptures. Her materials include items such as buttons, artificial plants, colored yarn, leaves, scraps of textiles, shells, beads, combs and glitter. Her main medium is acrylic, but she occasionally mixes and matches with oil and watercolor.  Cooper explores the theme of how African Americans have contributed to the multilayered fabric of our American democracy, starting with 1619 up to the present. She says she views the world through an abstract lens, and attempts to get it on canvas in the best way she can. You can see more of her work on Instagram @kymcoopeart. She has prints available for sale. Send her a direct message on her Instagram to purchase prints. Cooper also has non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for sale, which can be found at voice.com/kymdebra. About the Artwork  "Mama Braiding" is a glimpse into a person of color's family life, in this case, a mother braiding her daughter's hair. Kym describes this piece as expressing her travels abroad as this image of a mother braiding her daughter's hair can be seen globally. The piece is mixed media, using acrylic paint, colored yarn, a comb and an artificial flower. Cooper says this mixed approach brings life to the piece and makes you feel like you are sitting on the couch alongside the mother.   About the Artist Kym Cooper is a writer, educator and visual artist.
