UWS Rotunda Closure Goes Into Effect On Friday: What To Know

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Upper West Side drivers will want to pay attention as some major closures go into effect Friday for the West 79th Street Rotunda that connects the West Side Highway with the neighborhood. The Department of Transportation recently posted an "important notice" that the rehabilitation of the Rotunda and its corresponding lane closures will begin on Friday. The low-volume ramps, with access to and from the Rotunda only, will be closed for the duration of the project. The total project is expected to take four years. Access to the Henry Hudson Parkway, though, will remain open through the usual 79th Street ramps. Photo courtesy of NYC DOT The 79th Street ramps to exit and enter the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway will also remain open, but with reduced width for the duration of the construction. The DOT adds that all temporary traffic patterns, like the above-mentioned reduced width, are subject to review during the construction and can be changed. The Rotunda is a three-level facility that carries cars, pedestrians and bikers in three directions: into Riverside Park (not cars), onto the Upper West Side's Riverside Drive on 79th Street, and along the West Side Highway.
