Chicago-Based Saxophonist and South Arts Jazz Road Grantee To Present New Work In Durham In Celebration of Black History Month Join Al Strong and The Art of Cool Project for the premier of a newly commissioned work by saxophonist Ernest Dawkins entitled "Refound Connections,” an homage to Dawkins' long-lost southern ancestry featuring Durham-based trumpeter Al Strong alongside Ernest Dawkins (saxophone), Kevin King (woodwinds), Alexis Lombre (piano), Ivan Taylor (bass), Isaiah Spencer (drums), and North Carolina Central's own Gracie Jay (voice). On Friday, February 18th a “work-in-progress” performance/open rehearsal/masterclass will be held from 7pm-10pm . On Saturday, February 19th the premier performance of “Refound Connections" takes place from 8pm-9:30 pm. Events are free to the public and proof of vaccination or proof of a negative Covid test within 48 hours required for all attendees. In partnership with The Art of Cool Project, Mr. Dawkins was awarded a Jazz Road Creative Residencies grant to compose and present a new musical work while residing in Durham for a 2-week period; February 8th-21st. The residency includes research, composition, workshops, outings, concerts, meetings with musicians, and masterclasses at North Carolina Central University, SYA Academy, Durham School of The Arts, and Sallie B. Howard School in Wilson, NC. The Residency “Refound Connections” is made possible with the support of Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W.
