Sorry no kittens here, that was just click bait. I just needed to get peoples attention who are looking to add a member to their family. And that is exactly what getting a pet is, a member of the family, not a gift or an impulse buy, a pet for your kid, etc. The reason I’m posting this is to not have people make the same mistakes I’ve made. I got my first cat at 19 when I was broke and another at 23, when again, I was broke. I’m now 28 and still have both cats but I live with my parents while I’m going to school and am in a very difficult position where my cats after a few years stopped getting along and now I have to keep them separated 100% of the time. I’ve brought in a cat behavioralist, read every article on the internet and am having no luck and am now at the point where I might have to rehome one which is truly the hardest thing I will have ever had to do. So I’m hoping to prevent others from being in the same position I am and would like to give a couple tips I’ve learned over the past 10 years of having very difficult cats (I haven’t even begun to address all the other issues Ive had with them) 1. If your getting a kitten and don’t have a cat already, get two. Cats turn out a million times better if they grow up with one of their litter mates (google it and you’ll understand why) 2. If you have a cat, and it’s never lived with a cat before, really evaluate your cats behavior before you bring home another one to be sure it will adjust well. Cats typically don’t like another feline in their territory when they’ve never had to share before. 3. I highly discourage people from getting pets before 30. Typically your in school, in and out of relationships, moving around, broke, and constantly going out and enjoying your youth. Some people have the misconception that cats don’t need a lot of attention and that is far from the truth. 4. Lastly, please don’t get kittens off Craigslist, most people here are just trying to make a quick buck and there are always kittens in shelters, you can also go to petfinder.com and see a large selection of cats/kittens that need to be adopted in your area. I only encourage Craigslist for adopting adult pets whose owners have fell on hard times or due to living situations are no longer able to care for their pet. I don’t mean to rant, these are just things I wish I knew before making such a huge life decision that would effect every step I made in life until I’m 40 years old. Just try to be part of the solution, not the problem (:
