BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Just in time for the Jewish New Year, iconic Beverly Hills deli Nate 'n Al's has announced that it will continue serving customers from its current location on 414 North Beverly Drive. According to a joint statement from the restaurant and the City of Beverly Hills, the deli is looking for a new home in town, but will be able to stay in its current location for the time being. After announcing it would close its 75-year location back in March, owners Shelli and Irving Azoff hoped the restaurant would move into a city-owned space on North Canon Drive once the building was sold and the lease had ended. But once they saw the property, they decided that the city space could not fit their needs, and they decided to stay put until they find somewhere else. "Our plan is to stay at our current location on Beverly Drive until we have some clarity and evaluate what our location choices are moving forward," Shelli Azoff said in a statement. "The City has supported us throughout this process, and we know they will help us in the future. It is our hope to remain in Beverly Hills where the Mendelsons started their journey in 1945 and have provided us with the best deli around!" The deli announced at the end of March that it was closing, causing an outpouring of grief. Beverly Hills Councilmember and former Mayor John Mirisch called its closure "nothing short of devastating for our entire community." He told City News Service that "after 75 years, it is beyond sad to see it go with a whimper like this." Managers quickly clarified that the closure was temporary, though the future is uncertain. On May 15, the restaurant restarted service, offering takeout, delivery, and new menu items. So at least for now, it's business as usual.
