Press release from the City of San Antonio: Thursday, January 27, 2022 CONTACT: Imgard Rop Director of Public Relations [email protected] | (210) 207-8261 SAN ANTONIO (January 27, 2021) - The office of Councilman McKee-Rodriguez in collaboration with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will host a second blood drive on Friday, January 28 at Claude W. Black Community Center from 9a.m. to 2p.m. Our communities are facing a dramatic drop in blood donations which has been exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic. The number of younger and first-time donors has significantly reduced not only nationally but also in Bexar County. Blood transfusions are essential for surgical operations, treatment for cancer, chronic illness, and traumatic injuries. As the nation faces acute blood shortage, our office requests a review of the Food and Drug Administration policy that requires male donors to be deferred for three months if they have been sexually active with another male. When lives need to be saved, we should not have a policy that needlessly excludes potential donors. We will hold a press conference at the same location at 12p.m. to demand action. Those who donate will receive a coupon from HEB for one free pint of Creamy Creations ice cream, a dozen donuts from Krispy Kreme and one long sleeved T-shirt from South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Your donation will save a life. To donate, schedule through the following link: https://donor.southtexasblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/135840 This press release was produced by the City of San Antonio.
