AZUSA, CA — A brush fire erupted in the mountains above Los Angeles County on Saturday evening as hot and windy conditions raged across the Southland. The blaze, dubbed the Madre Fire, prompted street closures in Azusa — about 23 miles from downtown Los Angeles — and had charred between one and two acres by 9 p.m. The fire broke out before 7 p.m. Saturday evening, but crews were a mopping up the blaze by Sunday morning. Crews were responding to the fire around East Sierra Avenue and Azusa Veterans Way, Dispatch Supervisor Robert Diaz told City News Service. The department was using two water-dropping helicopters and night vision technology in their battle to control the flames, according to the department. City News Service contributed to this report.
