White Plains Changes School Start To Remote Learning

WHITE PLAINS, NY — School for students in the White Plains district will be starting with remote learning. However, unlike some other districts that will begin with remote learning for a month, White Plains will only be remote for seven days. At a recent board of education meeting, trustees approved a plan for school to begin Thursday, Sept. 10 with remote learning and will begin hybrid instruction Monday, Sept. 21. Superintendent Joseph Ricca called it a "conservative plan" that will "allow us to re-enter our facilities safely and for the long haul." "We don't want to re-enter our facilities only to have to close down for 14 days," he said. Ricca said the shift in opening will allow the district to bring in faculty and staff first, with lower density, so everyone will be able to get the technology up to where it needs to be. After that, the district can start bringing in the students. This will "ease us into a reopening of our facilities in a safe manner," Ricca said. Previously, the district announced its plan for hybrid learning in which students will be in classrooms either one or two days a week, depending on the grade level. That will start Sept. 21. Parents also have the opportunity to opt out of hybrid learning and have their children taught remotely. New Rochelle and Suffern in the lower Hudson Valley announced their districts will be beginning classes remotely in September and transition to in-class learning in October.
