Cobb School Board Member: Masks To Be Required

MARIETTA, GA—A Cobb County School District board member took to social media Tuesday to announce that the district plans to require students to wear masks if they return to the classroom next month. "Masks will be required for CCSD students and staff. Exemptions will be granted as needed. That is all the information I have right now from the superintendent," CCSD board member Charisse Davis said on her official Facebook page. Last month, the school district released plans for its upcoming school year, which would allow parents to choose between face-to-face and remote instruction for their children. Parents still have until July 10 to make a decision. "If you choose remote learning, you will be asked to certify that you have access to a device, the internet, and are committed to the remote learning environment for the semester," the district said. "If you choose face-to-face learning, you will also be asked if you intend for your student(s) to ride the bus." At the time, for parents opting to have their students return to the classroom, masks were only encouraged - not required - on buses and in school buildings. According to Davis, the school district has recently changed its stance on that, making face masks a requirement. However, she may have let the cat out of the bag a little too soon. When the AJC reached out to the school district to confirm Davis' Facebook post, Cobb County School District spokeswoman Nan Kiel told the newspaper that the information about the mask requirement was provided to the school board, but "not meant to be released publicly at this time." In an effort to be as accurate as possible, Kiel said the school district will provide details for the 2020-2021 school year when they are finalized.
