Description
MARIETTA, GA — An inmate from the Cobb County Detention Center after the county coroner's office confirmed that they received the body of a person who had been in the custody of the Cobb County Sheriff's Department.
According to reports, the person – whom the coroner's office declined to identify – is the third person to die at the detention center this year and the 10th inmate who has died since December 2018, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. The paper indicated that an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
An email sent to the Cobb County Sheriff's Department on Friday was not immediately returned.
The Department of Justice was asked to investigate the deaths at the detention center by Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes, who lost her bid for re-election earlier this month. Democrat Flynn Broady defeated Holmes and has criticized her handling of investigating the deaths at the detention center.
In August, Broady issued a statement of the handling of the deaths in August. In it, Broady said that "being arrested should not be a death sentence and Cobb County has waited long enough for real change."
