In celebration of Black History Month, join architect and designer Nina Cooke John for an engaging and fun tile-making workshop.
In celebration of Black History Month, the City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs and designer Nina Cooke John invite residents to participate in this interactive tile-making workshop. Guests will be invited to etch symbols and stories of freedom and liberation onto wet clay that will later be fired and integrated into the final design of the new Harriet Tubman Monument. No artistic experience necessary! Instructors and volunteers will be there to help.
As we recognize how community was at the crux of Tubman’s work as the conductor of the Underground Railroad, this tile-making workshop will to center community and call for the voices of Newark residents to be an integral part of the creation of the Harriet Tubman monument, thus intertwining Harriet’s story with our stories.
Please arrive on time. Space is limited. All ages and backgrounds welcome!
Workshops will be held citywide from February through May 2022 as we celebrate the legacy of Harriet Tubman all year long. For more information email: [email protected].
