St. Paul United Church of Christ of Pekin will celebrate the coming of Lent with a church service designed to explore the roots of jazz celebrating traditional New Orleans music with the Lamoine River Ramblers. Dr. Cooper, Director of Jazz Studies at Western Illinois University states “Jazz found its way into all aspects of life early on in New Orleans. Musicians celebrated at parties and cried in funeral processions throughout the city as this music formed a new uniquely American style. New Orleans musicians celebrated church with all the passion and energy musically in those early days as they did playing in clubs for patrons on Saturday night.” PHILOSOPHY: There are many common spiritual connections between religion, the arts, and the Church. We believe that St Paul UCC has an unique opportunity to leverage our current strengths, assets, and activities to enhance the quality of life for the people of Pekin in a way that promotes spirituality and an appreciation for both our church, and The Church. Furthermore, utilizing the Arts to explore and promote multiculturalism will aid in our church’s mission of bringing people together through love and mutual understanding at a time in our own community and in the world where both seem absent.
